Smithfield 3D, Stoke-on-Trent

A five storey office building with additional basement space for housing of plant and cycle storage facilities beneath part of the ground floor area. Integra provided multiple scheme design options allowing reviews of cost, constructability, programme and aesthetics to be conducted by the wider design, project and client teams. The design options presented used varying structural materials and construction methodologies including an in-situ reinforced concrete frame, clear span steel composite metal decking & clear span precast flooring on non-composite steelwork. Exercises were conducted to determine the optimum extent, level and height of the basement structure to balance the amount of usable space with construction costs thereby protecting the client’s interests. Similarly, options were presented for both an in-situ reinforced concrete stability core and a steel braced core to determine the most efficient design. Following review from the wider team, it was determined that use of composite metal deck flooring supported by fabricated cellular beams provided the optimum balance between cost efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Each cellular beam was designed to be an exposed architectural feature with tapered ends built into the core walls. The building loads are resisted by piled foundations with in-situ retaining walls constructed to the external basement perimeter.
